Today I joined Louise and Clint Slater at Jubilee Crescent Community Centre to gather support for enhanced road safety in Radford and across Coventry. The police were also in attendance so that they could hear from residents about specific issues that are within their remit.
I want to say a big thank you to everyone who came out in support of the Slaters and our petition ‘Keaton’s Limit’, as well as those who asked me important questions throughout the meeting.
We spoke a lot about the different measures that need to be implemented in Radford in order to protect children and pedestrians of all ages from road accidents. We are currently coordinating a wider campaign on road safety near schools, so it was very helpful to hear support for this, as well as from residents and representatives from different schools who explained the specific issues they see.
We also discussed the Slaters’ fight for justice and the extradition of Keaton’s suspected killer, who is thought to have escaped to Latvia. In 2021 post Brexit, Latvia was one of several EU countries that announced it would no longer extradite its own citizens to the UK. However, I have spoken to multiple Ministers and have now written to the British Ambassador to Latvia and am writing to the Latvian Ambassador to the UK to try to arrange a meeting to discuss how we can work together to help Keaton’s family and get justice for Keaton.
Locally, we are imploring everyone to sign our petition, ‘Keaton’s Limit.’ By doing so, you would not only be supporting lowering the speed limit on Radford Road but also advocating for the implementation of staggered traffic lights (which would ensure vehicles can’t speed down the entire road). The petition also calls for another zebra crossing and stronger enforcement from the police, which will be essential to ensuring that drivers slow down.
