Today, Jess Phillips read out the names of Pauline Sweeney and Astra Sirapina in her speech in the International Women’s Day Debate in Parliament. Pauline and Astra were from Coventry North West. Jess read out their names to honour the women and girls that were murdered by a man, or suspected to have been murdered by a man, over the last year.
One name would be too many, but I sat there as Jess read out the names of 95 women. In this country, a woman is killed on average every three days. This year’s list also included four children.
I want to honour Pauline and Astra, and all the other women who have been killed at the hands of male violence in this country. These women had full lives to lead which were tragically cut short.
I want to thank all the MPs who took part in this debate. The debate touched on so many issues regarding women’s equality in this country. Some MPs shared very personal stories of sexual violence and domestic abuse, whilst others highlighted the incredible achievements of their constituents.
Whilst we have come a long way in our fight for equality, days like today remind us of how far we have yet to go.
Lastly, I want to send my condolences and best wishes to the families and loved ones of all the women mentioned today. I’m so sorry for your loss.
