Today’s Westminster Hall debate on prosecutions relating to violence against women and girls in the West Midlands laid bare the scale of the challenge we face — and the urgent need for reform.

Between 1st January and 28th November 2024, West Midlands Police received over 7,700 reports of rape or sexual assault, yet only 217 resulted in a charge or conviction. That’s a conviction rate of just 2.8%. For survivors, the average time it takes for an adult rape case to reach a full verdict is now over six years. These figures are not just statistics — they represent real people, real trauma, and a justice system that is simply not delivering.

The Labour Government is taking decisive action to rebuild trust in the justice system and better protect women and girls. We’ve introduced Raneem’s Law – now being piloted by West Midlands Police – to strengthen protections for victims of domestic abuse, and the CPS’s joint national action plan has already led to a 7% increase in domestic abuse prosecutions in our region.

But we must go further. That’s why we’re committed to expanding access to independent sexual violence advisors and domestic abuse advocates, ensuring survivors have the support they need from the moment they come forward. We’re also strengthening protections for victims of stalking and online abuse, including new powers for courts and police, and investing in prevention and education so young people learn about healthy relationships and consent early on.

Our commitment is backed by real investment – with £24 million in additional funding for criminal legal aid and £92 million annually for criminal solicitors – to help build a justice system that is faster, fairer, and truly survivor-centred.

I will continue to push for these changes – because women and girls in Coventry and across the West Midlands deserve to feel safe, supported, and heard.

Yours sincerely,

Taiwo Owatemi, MP for Coventry North West.
