This week, I had the pleasure of joining Sky Blues in the Community at Our Lady of the Assumption Primary Schoolin Tile Hill, where they were delivering the Coventry HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) programme. The initiative, funded by Coventry City Council and supported by the Department for Education, aims to tackle the challenges many families face during school holidays — especially those related to food insecurity and lack of access to enriching activities.
The programme provides free meals and engaging activities to children who receive benefit-related free school meals. But its impact goes far beyond nutrition. It creates safe, joyful spaces where children can play, learn, and connect — and where families feel supported and seen.
Fighting the Holiday Experience Gap
Research shows that children from low-income households often face a “holiday experience gap.” During school breaks, they may miss out on structured activities, healthy meals, and social interaction. This can lead to increased isolation, poor nutrition, and a decline in physical and emotional wellbeing.
The Coventry HAF programme, delivered by Sky Blues in the Community, is a powerful response to this challenge. It offers a blend of sports, arts, crafts, and food education, all in a welcoming environment. Children not only stay active and nourished — they also build confidence, friendships, and memories.
Creativity, Connection, and Biscuits
One of the highlights of my visit was decorating biscuits with the children. Their creativity was infectious, and their enthusiasm lit up the room. Some of them showed serious talent — I wouldn’t be surprised if a few end up on Bake Off in the future!
These moments of connection are what make the HAF programme so special. It’s not just about filling time or plates — it’s about filling hearts. The joy on the children’s faces, the laughter echoing through the hall, and the sense of community were truly moving.
I’m incredibly grateful to everyone involved — from the Sky Blues in the Community team to the school staff and volunteers — for creating such a welcoming and impactful space. Their dedication ensures that no child is left behind during the holidays.
Since its launch, the Coventry HAF programme has reached hundreds of children across the city, helping them stay healthy, active, and engaged. It’s a shining example of what can happen when local organisations, schools, and councils work together to support families.
How You Can Help
If you know a family who might benefit from the HAF programme, encourage them to explore Coventry’s HAF listings. Many sessions are free and open to children aged 5–16. You can also learn more about the initiative on Sky Blues in the Community’s official HAF page.
Together, we can make sure every child in Coventry has access to the joy, nourishment, and creativity they deserve — not just during term time, but all year round.
