That wonderful sense of pride in Coventry’s rich heritage was on full display at the Dame Goodyver’s Day celebration — part of the city’s Heritage Open Days during Coventry Heritage Week.
This historic event honours the legacy of Lady Godiva, one of Coventry’s most enduring and symbolic figures. Traditionally, the day marked the anniversary of her death and was celebrated with a community feast known as “Dame Goodyver’s Daye.” Today, it continues to be a joyful reminder of Coventry’s deep-rooted traditions and the enduring spirit of its people.
The colourful procession from Broadgate to Priory Garden brought history to life, featuring vibrant music, beautiful costumes, and handmade banners that filled the city centre with energy and pride. The celebrations were made even more special by the Godiva Sisters, who generously provided delicious food and hospitality for everyone attending.
I was delighted to join the festivities alongside Coventry’s Lord Mayor, Rachel Lancaster, and Cllr Angela Hopkins, together with my team. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with residents, local groups, and volunteers who work tirelessly to keep Coventry’s heritage alive.
Events like Dame Goodyver’s Day are more than just celebrations — they’re a testament to the strength of community, the importance of storytelling, and the shared pride that binds Coventry together. Our city’s history continues to inspire, bringing people from all backgrounds together to honour the past and look confidently toward the future.
