Spending Review
Date
12 June 2025
I welcome the government’s bold commitment to investing in the industries of the future. This Spending Review sets out a vision for a greener, fairer economy – supporting clean energy, modern infrastructure, and stronger public services. The investment in nuclear energy – alongside the creation of Great British Energy, support for the steel industry, and the biggest boost to social housing in a generation – lays the foundations for long-term growth.
This review also delivers for how people in Coventry live, move, and work. Increased local transport funding, the extension of the £3 bus fare cap, and full backing for the Midlands Rail Hub will make it easier for people to get around – connecting them to jobs, opportunities, and communities across the region.
However, better transport must go hand in hand with better prospects. That’s why I welcome the investment in schools and the commitment to improving classrooms – support that will make a real difference to pupils and teachers, including here in Coventry.
The review also puts skills, innovation, and enterprise at the heart of our economic future. With new funding for training and apprenticeships, we’re helping young people into skilled work. Increased investment in research, technology, and small businesses will also help our universities and entrepreneurs lead in the industries of tomorrow.
I’m especially pleased to see a two-thirds increase in funding for the British Business Bank. This will make it easier for small and medium-sized businesses in Coventry to access the finance they need to start up, scale up, and succeed. Whether it’s a local manufacturer looking to expand or a tech start-up ready to grow, this support will help drive innovation, create jobs, and strengthen our local economy.
And at the heart of it all is our NHS. I know how much people in Coventry value our health service, and I’m pleased to see a major increase in funding to reduce waiting times, modernise services, and support the incredible staff who keep it running. After everything they’ve done for us, this investment is not just necessary – it’s the least they deserve. Under a Labour Government, access to free healthcare will always be protected.
This is a step in the right direction. I’ll keep working to make sure Coventry gets its fair share – and that this investment reaches the people who need it most.
Yours sincerely,
Taiwo Owatemi, MP for Coventry North West.
