I welcome today’s announcement that more than 75% of pensioners across the UK – around nine million people – will now be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. This is a significant and compassionate step that will provide vital support to older people during the colder months, helping them manage energy costs with greater security.
I’ve heard directly from residents in Coventry about the pressures they face – including through a series of energy support events I hosted over the last year, where many shared their unease about rising costs and access to help. In Westminster, I relayed these concerns to relevant ministers and senior government officials.
The government has listened carefully to the concerns raised by the public about the previous changes to Winter Fuel Payments. Today’s announcement reflects that feedback. By extending eligibility to all pensioners with an income of £35,000 or less, we are ensuring that support reaches those who need it most – those on modest, fixed incomes who are often most vulnerable to rising living costs.
This decision is part of a broader economic plan that is delivering for working people and retirees alike. Labour has taken urgent and difficult decisions to fix the public finances after a period of instability. Thanks to those choices, we have restored economic stability and created the conditions for sustainable growth.
In Coventry, this expanded support will make a real difference to thousands of households. I know from speaking with residents that the cost of living remains a concern, especially for older people. This payment will offer practical help and peace of mind as we head into winter.
I am proud to support this policy and the wider work we are doing to build a fairer, stronger economy. Whether it’s through targeted financial support, investment in public services, or creating good jobs in cities like Coventry, this government is delivering on its promises.
