It was a privilege to attend the BBC CWR Make a Difference Awards, an evening dedicated to recognising the incredible individuals and groups who go above and beyond for our community. These awards highlight the selflessness, dedication, and compassion that make Coventry such a special place.
I was especially proud to celebrate David Monks and Martin Brandreth, two outstanding members of our community. David Monks MBE won the Great Neighbour Award for decades of voluntary service, including recording audio for the visually impaired, writing and producing school plays, and supporting the Monday Club for the Blind at the Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind. Martin Brandreth won the Fundraiser Award for raising over £90,000 through the Christmas Tractor Run, a beloved local tradition that brings people together and supports local causes. Their work exemplifies the extraordinary impact that dedication and kindness can have on our city.
Other nominees included:
-
Paul Quinn, organiser of Covtember, a grassroots music festival supporting local talent and community initiatives.
-
Chris Tooth, who volunteers five days a week running Clothing Coventry’s school uniform bank, ensuring children have the clothing they need for school.
-
Archie’s Smile, supporting families and children with Down syndrome.
-
Paul and Richard Burbidge Grant, whose festive lights in Coundon have become a beacon of joy for the community.
- Kairos Women Working Together (WWT), recognised for providing holistic, trauma-informed, long-term support and advocacy for women who are subject to or at risk of sexual exploitation.
It was particularly wonderful to catch up with Chris and Katie from Clothing Coventry at the awards, having recently spent a morning at their organisation the week before the school uniform bank opened. During that visit, I saw first-hand all the incredible work being done, including chatting with Chris as she coordinated the preparation of the school uniform bank. Witnessing their dedication up close made attending the awards even more meaningful and highlighted the extraordinary spirit that truly defines Coventry.
Events like this remind us of the power of community involvement. If you’re inspired by these stories, there are many ways to get involved – from volunteering with local charities to supporting fundraising initiatives and attending community events. Together, we can continue to make Coventry a place where compassion and community thrive.
