Visiting Langar Aid in Sherbourne

31 January 2026 I was delighted to visit Langar Aid again in Sherbourne with my team and spend time learning more about the vital work they do to support people across our community.

Rooted in the Sikh tradition of Langar – the principle of providing free food to everyone, regardless of background or circumstance — Langar Aid continues to be a lifeline for many local residents.

The Power of Langar: Free Food for All

Langar is a centuries-old Sikh practice centred on equality, dignity, and service. At Langar Aid, this tradition comes to life through the preparation and distribution of hot, nutritious meals for anyone in need.

At a time when many families are facing rising costs and financial pressures, access to reliable community food support in Sherbourne has never been more important. Langar Aid ensures that no one is turned away and that support is given with dignity and respect.

Volunteering in Action

During our visit, we were pleased to roll up our sleeves and help pack meals ready for distribution. We also had the opportunity to hand out food and speak directly with volunteers about their experiences.

These conversations were incredibly valuable. Volunteers shared insights into the growing demand for food aid locally and the challenges many individuals and families are currently facing. Their dedication and compassion were evident in every aspect of their work.

Tackling Food Insecurity in Our Community

Community organisations like Langar Aid play a crucial role in addressing food insecurity in Sherbourne and the wider area. Beyond providing meals, they offer connection, reassurance, and a sense of belonging to those who may otherwise feel isolated.

By bringing people together – whether as volunteers or recipients – Langar Aid strengthens community bonds and demonstrates the power of collective action.

A Heartfelt Thank You

Thank you to everyone at Langar Aid for such a warm welcome and for the incredible compassion and commitment you show every single day. Your work represents the very best of Sherbourne – community spirit, generosity, and the belief that everyone deserves support and respect.
